Isak double seals Wear-Tyne derby win for Newcastle

In the Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light, Newcastle easily defeated rivals Sunderland to secure their place in the FA Cup's fourth round.

Ten minutes before halftime, Sunderland defender Dan Ballard sliced Joelinton's cross into his net, giving the Magpies the lead after they had applied constant pressure.

After less than a minute of play, Miguel Almiron stole the ball from Pierre Ekwah and squared for Alexander Isak to score into an open net, giving Newcastle complete control of their first Wear-Tyne derby since 2016.

In the dying seconds, Isak scored his second goal from the penalty spot after Ballard had taken down Anthony Gordon in the box.

Sunderland, playing in the Championship, struggled against their Premier League opponents in the first forty-five minutes, managing just one shot and just twenty-eight percent of the possession. However, they improved in the second half and put goalie Martin Dubravka to the test multiple times.

The Slovakian international made some outstanding saves to deny Ekwah and Alex Pritchard, ensuring Newcastle won for the first time at the Stadium of Light since 2011.

As Sunderland poured everything at their opponents in an attempt to find a way back into the match, Pritchard also had his attempt smash off the crossbar, but their efforts were in vain.

Newcastle's 6,000-strong traveling fan base let out raucous "ole" cries as they calmly finished the match by stroking the ball around the Stadium of Light.

The lone setback to Newcastle's victory was Joelinton, the midfield player, suffering an injury late in the first half. The Brazilian did come back for the second half, but he was replaced after only two minutes due to his inability to get well.

This is Eddie Howe's first FA Cup win since taking over Newcastle in November 2021; the previous two seasons saw him lose in the third round to Sheffield Wednesday and Cambridge.

The win also puts an end to the Magpies' four-match losing streak in all competitions.
