A “new development” in the Dani Alves case...a video that causes a crisis

The lawyer representing the woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Brazilian footballer Dani Alves has filed a legal complaint with Spanish authorities after a video circulated on social media that allegedly revealed her client's identity.

Esther Garcia, the alleged victim's attorney, told The Associated Press on Friday that her office had filed the legal complaint.

The Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia said that Garcia submitted the complaint to the Catalan police in Barcelona.

The video clip shows alleged photos of the young woman, in addition to information that supposedly reveals her name and other personal data.

The Spanish public prosecutor's office in Barcelona told The Associated Press that it is analyzing the video to see if there are grounds to open an official investigation.

Spanish law prohibits the publication of any material that reveals a person's identity without their consent.

The Public Prosecutor's Office also asked the court, based in Barcelona, to ensure the privacy of the trial, which is scheduled to begin next February 5.

Alves is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022.

Since January 2023, the former right-back for Barcelona has been detained pending trial.

His requests for bail were rejected because the court deemed him a flight risk.

Alves denied any wrongdoing and initially claimed he had not had any sexual contact with the woman, but later said he had consensual sex with the accused.

The investigating judge indicted him in August when the court said there was sufficient evidence to begin a trial.

Prosecutors are demanding a nine-year prison sentence if found guilty, and the victim's lawyers want him to spend 12 years behind bars.
