Despite Joao Gomes being sent off after just nine minutes, Wolves advanced to face Premier League rivals Brentford in an FA Cup third-round rematch.
After making a risky tackle on Christian Norgaard, the captain of Brentford, midfielder Gomes received a straight red card.
At Brentford Community Stadium, the home team controlled possession and took the lead on minute 41 thanks to a goal from Neal Maupay.
However, Wolves neatly secured a draw when Tommy Doyle scored the team's first goal with a 25-yard drive.
The Frenchman Maupay gave his team the lead with his third goal since returning to Brentford on loan from Everton in the summer.
Following a Mathias Jensen free-kick, a loose ball rebounded out from the crowded six-yard area, and Maupay struck the ball with strength and accuracy inside the left-hand post.
It offered Brentford optimism for their first FA Cup victory over a Premier League team since they defeated Sunderland in their League One season in 2005–06.
Doyle, though, who played for Sheffield United and advanced to the semifinals the previous season, had other ideas.
After a brief corner kick, the Manchester City loanee got the ball 25 yards out on minute 64 and fired a spectacular strike past home goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.
Consequently, Wolves will face a replay in the third round for the second year in a row after being eliminated by Liverpool at the same level the previous year.
Gomes' red card for a studs-up tackle was less controversial than Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin's dismissal during his team's goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Thursday night.
The tackle forced Brentford captain Norgaard off the field, although preliminary assessments indicate his ankle injury may not be as serious as initially thought.
After only two touches of the ball, Brazilian Gomes lunged in on the Dane, putting Wolves well on the defensive.
The incident in minute 27, when Mikkel Damsgaard caught Doyle above the ankle but referee Tony Harrington only gave him a yellow card, was more contentious.
Gary O'Neil, manager of Wolves, was not happy. Damsgaard did not follow Gomes' lead and, although it eventually resulted in a handshake, he got into a heated argument with Brentford rival Thomas Frank on the touchline.
In stoppage time in the second half, Brentford attacker Keane Lewis-Potter grabbed Wolves full-back Nelson Semedo by the throat during a brawl, causing further furious scenes.
Brentford, who have lost five straight Premier League games and are in danger of being relegated, will face extra pressure if they are unable to hold onto a victory against a team that was reduced to 10 men for more than 81 minutes.
Frank made four changes to the team that lost to Crystal Palace the previous game, one of which was to allow Maupay to take the lead in the attack.
The forward, who has a stellar FA Cup record with Brentford, returned the favor. In all four of his cup games during his final season with the Bees in 2018–19, Maupay contributed to a goal with three goals and one assist.
Frank will be hoping that Maupay can now provide the finishing touch to the league, while Brentford is still concerned about what will happen to Ivan Toney when he serves out his suspension for breaking betting regulations.
