Brighton's Joao Pedro scored twice in the second half to send Roberto de Zerbi's team into the FA Cup fourth round, following Championship underdogs Stoke's near-scandal at the bet365 Stadium.
After Jan Paul van Hecke turned Bae Jun-Ho's low cross into his net, Stoke had not defeated a Premier League team in the competition since they advanced to the final in 2011. For thirty minutes, however, they looked set to accomplish just that.
However, in seven minutes either side of the half, full-back Pervis Estupinan produced yet another incredible performance, and captain Lewis Dunk scored a header from close range to turn the game around.
After a Dunk handball in the 63rd minute, Lewis Baker did equalize from the penalty spot, but Brighton was already in control of possession.
And as Steve Schumacher's team attempted to regroup after fending off another attack into their penalty area, Joao Pedro headed home Pascal Gross's accurate chip.
The Brazilian then slid in to put Van Hecke's low cross past Daniel Iversen, bringing his season total to 15 goals across all competitions and nine goals in his last 11 games. Brighton hasn't had a player achieve that mark since Glenn Murray in 2018–19.
Brighton, the semi-finalists from the previous season, are still in the running in three tournaments and have advanced to the Europa League round of 16.
Although Stoke's main goal was always to stay in the second division, this was their first loss since Schumacher took over as manager last month.
