Under Regragui's direction, the "Atlas Lions" advanced to the 2022 World Cup semifinals in Qatar, setting a record for African and Arab teams. They are the front-runners to win the second championship in their history.
They easily dispatched Tanzania 3-0, drew with the Democratic Republic of the Congo 1-1, and then defeated Zambia 1-0. But the price of the final did not smile at Achraf Hakimi and his companions, as they fell to South Africa 0-2, thus continuing Morocco’s knot with the tournament whose title was won once in 1976.
Morocco's performances created "a feeling of regret and heartbreak among all components of Moroccan football," according to the Moroccan Federation, which added that its president, Faouzi Lakjaa, attended "several evaluation meetings... with Regragui."
Regragui raised the bar during the last World Cup when he said that he would resign from his position if he did not reach the semi-finals. Morocco is competing in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, while it will host the next edition of the African Cup in the summer of 2025.
