Manchester United Advances to FA Cup Fourth Round After Victory Over Wigan Athletic

Erik ten Hag's team advanced to the FA Cup's fourth round because Manchester United proved to be too formidable for Wigan Athletic of League One.

Following a chance that was blocked by the excellent Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot gave the 12-time cup champions a 22nd-minute lead with a lovely curling strike.

As United pushed for a second, Rasmus Hojlund's diving header touched the bar, Rashford's shot was tripped up by Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle, and Alejandro Garnacho's well-hit 20-yard attempt also rebounded against the wall.

Before United won the game in the second half, Martial Godo wasted a rare opportunity for the hosts to equalize by failing to connect cleanly from six yards out.

Following a challenge by Liam Shaw that clipped Bruno Fernandes' foot, the Portuguese midfielder was awarded a penalty, which he then converted for United's second goal.

The fourth round draw was held right before kickoff, and the teams Manchester United will play will either Newport County, which is placed 18th in League Two, or non-league Eastleigh, which is ranked 11th in the National League and the second-bottom team left.

After a 1-1 draw over the weekend in South Wales, those clubs will meet again the following week. Round four will take place over the final weekend of January.
