Liverpool rallies to defeat Fulham in the EFL Cup

Liverpool defeated Fulham at Anfield in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final match after a stunning comeback in the second half.

In the first half, Willian's excellent control inside the area to slot in gave the visitors the lead.

After a strong first half, Fulham more than deserved it, but Liverpool improved after the interval and responded with two goals in the space of three minutes.

Curtis Jones first equalized the score in the 68th minute, deflecting a long-range shot off Tosin Adarabioyo and wrong-footing Bernd Leno in the Fulham goal.

Replace After that, Cody Gakpo made a Darwin Nunez pull-back to excite the home crowd.

It was the second time Liverpool had prevented Fulham from winning at Anfield in just over a month. In the last ten minutes of their Premier League match on December 3, Marco Silva's team had a 3-2 lead but ultimately lost 4-3.

On Wednesday, January 24, the two teams will play again at Craven Cottage in the second leg. With Jurgen Klopp's team again leading the race, they will try to hold onto their dreams of winning a record-tying 10th League Cup.

With several important players absent going into the match, Premier League leaders Liverpool might have had a difficult game.

Wataru Endo and Mohamed Salah are away on international service, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—who was superb in their FA Cup third-round victory against Arsenal this past weekend—may miss a few weeks due to an injury.

After coming dangerously close to a victory at Anfield last month, Fulham appeared primed to upset Liverpool this time around.

The hosts were a little sloppy and apathetic, so they were worth their 1-0 lead at the interval.

But after the interval, Klopp's team was a different story. They pressed far higher up the pitch, and Fulham's defense was unable to keep up when Gakpo and Nunez were brought on halfway through the second half.

Ultimately, Liverpool could have won by a larger margin, and it was sad that the excellent Nunez was not credited with a goal once more.

The Reds have now won 14 of their 16 games played at Anfield without a loss, demonstrating their ability and desire to continue their impressive home record.
